Blick, T. & A. Hänggi, with co-operation of K. Thaler (2000):
Checklist of the arachnids of Germany, Switzerland and Austria (Arachnida: Araneae, Opiliones, Pseudoscorpiones, Scorpiones, Palpigradi). Preliminary version 2000-07-07. - Internet:: http://www.arages.de/checklist_e.html

This Internet-list provides the opportunity for everyone to inform themselves easily about the current status of the checklists of Germany, Switzerland and Austria.

There is, as yet, no comprehensive published checklist of Austrian spiders. The version here is a preliminary one and is clearly not complete.

  • This list is based exclusively on published works (see below).
  • Unpublished papers and new records (and cancellations) in press are NOT included (even if we know about these already).
  • NOT listed are species for which the records are noted as uncertain (see notes in the cited papers).
  • Valid subspecies are listed and counted as separate species.
  • A future enlargement to encompass other surrounding countries is possible and welcome.

This list is based on the following comprehensive papers (with short terms used in the checklist):

Germany [D]:
V = Spiders, harvestmen and pseudocorpions included in the German checklist (Platen et al. 1995);/td>
N = first records since 1995 (cited in detail).
Switzerland [CH]:
k = Catalogue of the spiders of Switzerland (Maurer & Hänggi 1990);
1/2 = 1st and 2nd addendum to the Swiss spider catalogue (Hänggi 1993, 1999);
1/2 = 1st and 2nd addendum to the Swiss spider catalogue (Hänggi 1993, 1999);
m = revision of the harvestmen of Central Europe (Martens 1978);
h = catalogue of the pseudoscorpions (Harvey 1991);
f = catalogue of scorpions (Fet et al. 2000);
N = records published in other papers (cited in detail).
Austria [A]:
2 - 6 = Contributions to the spider fauna of Northern Tyrol 2 to 6 (Thaler 1993, 1995, 1997a, 1997b, 1999);
T = overview of the Austrian Theridiidae (Knoflach & Thaler 1998);
L = overview of the Austrian Lycosidae (Buchar & Thaler 1997)
kh = spiders of Styria (Kropf & Horak 1996);
ks = spiders of Carinthia (Komposch & Steinberger 1999);
g = revisions of Liocranidae and Gnaphosidae (without Micaria) (Grimm 1985, 1986);
m = revision of the harvestmen of Central Europe (Martens 1978);
k = harvestmen of Carithia (Komposch 1999)
h = catalogue of pseudoscorpions (Harvey 1991);
f = catalogue of scorpions (Fet et al. 2000);
c = overview of Palpigradi (Condé 1996);
N = records published in other papers (cited in detail - without an intention to get the first record).

Notes:

If a record is cited from an upper source, it will not be cited from a lower one. The "Catalogus Faunae Austriae" is not the basis source of the data, as there are too many records which are too difficult to interpret.

The catalogues of Platnick provide the nomenclatorical base for the Araneae (compare Blick 1998, 1999), and we try to refer to the most up to date version from the Internet(see list of literature). Different taxonomic names (even authors, years, brackets) in the main sources listed above are included without citing a reference.

The base of nomenclature and familial affiliation of the other groups are:

  • Opiliones: Martens (1978), with few current changes

  • Pseudoscorpiones: Harvey (1991, 1992)

  • Scorpiones: Fet et al. (2000)

  • Palpigradi: Condé (1996)

The compilation of such a checklist is only possible due to the initial work of many individuals who publish their results. We want to thank all these kindly. We also want to thank in advance those individuals who will give us advice about other published papers in future.
